The top five qualifiers were quicker than last year's fast time. DRIVER QUOTES: #8 DAVID DONOHUE (PacWest Dodge) - "As a team we worked together to make sure that everything went as planned through today's session - the result speaks for itself. I think there is still time to be found in the car and in the driver." "It's exciting to capture my first pole of the season here in Detroit. With this being Dodge's home track, we obviously want to do well and this is a great way to start the weekend." #7 DOMINIC DOBSON (PacWest Dodge) - "We were successful in getting the PPG Dodge Stratus' out front for the first race and we're hoping for a repeat tomorrow. I was a little disappointed in our setup today and will be making some changes tomorrow to help improve on my performance." "The changes made to the Belle Isle circuit are noticeable and, for the most part have improved the track. However, it is even more difficult to pass here for us, which has put greater emphasis on qualifying as well." #4 NEIL CROMPTON (Tasman Motorsports) - "We're trying to learn the setup, learn the track and qualify the car. It's less than ideal given that other people have been here before. I know what we have to do to make some speed. It's not ideal to be starting fourth, but we'll make some changes and be ready." #1 RANDY POBST (T.C. Kline Racing) - "I think the CEC BMW likes the air temperature here. The car is going quick down the straightaways. We got some suspension bits to try on the car, but it's still not handling like it ought to be. We still haven't found the gremlins yet, but when we do, we will be there." The top five qualifiers were quicker than Donohue's pole time for the first race. DRIVER QUOTES: #8 DAVID DONOHUE (PacWest Dodge) - "Being out front to start both races is a big advantage. With the level of competition here, starting up front in our Dodge Stratus is important. It is really great to be on the pole fo both races." #7 DOMINIC DOBSON (PPG Dodge) - "The only way today's repeat could be sweeter is if I were on the pole with the PPG Dodge. With the Hondas and Randy Pobst getting their set up down, starting on the front row will be important. We'll have to work hard to keep everyone behind us. I'm happy to have the two Dodges out front." #4 NEIL CROMPTON (Tasman Motorsports) - "We made good progress from one day to the next, but the Dodge guys also made improvements. We're also suffering a little from new chum's syndrome, we just need to get bit better handle on the circuit, but we made a lot of improvement." #1 RANDY POBST (T.C. I'm happy with how I drove the car, but I am unhappy with how the car is behaving. The car is not turning the way it needs to be." #42 PETER CUNNINGHAM - "We picked up a good bit of time in today's qualifying. The car felt a lot better, but I still have a lot to learn about this track. We have a few things we'd like to improve on by tomorrow." 0.053 ________________________________________ FINAL QUALIFYING GRID Super Touring Championship - Race 2 - June 8, 1997 The Raceway on Belle Isle, Detroit - Length of Track: 2.1 miles POS NO DRIVER SPONSOR/CAR TIME/SPEED 1. 8 David Donohue PacWest Touring Car Group/Dodge 1:29.049 84.897* 2. 7 Dominic Dobson PPG/Dodge 1:29.178 84.774* 3. 4 Neil Crompton McCormack Lines/LCI/Honda 1:30.082 83.923* 4. 42 Peter Cunningham H.A.R.T./Honda 1:30.471 83.562* 5. 1 Randy Pobst CEC/BMW 1:30.885 83.182* 6. 18 Darren Law Hartong Motorsports/BMW 1:31.175 82.917 7. 27 David Welch Red Auto Leasing/Ford 1:31.685 82.456 8. 5 Bob Schader Schader Motorsports/Mazda 1:35.751 78.954 9. 6 Walt Puckett Schader Motorsports/Mazda 1:36.604 78.257 10. 62 Forrest Granlund H.A.R.T./Honda No-Time 11. 12 Brian Battaglia T.C. Donohue went wire-to-wire in race one, and Dobson moved past pole sitter Donohue on the start of race two and sped to victory lane. Dobson finished second in race one in his PPG Dodge after chasing Donohue's Pac West Dodge the entire 15-lap distance. Donohue, who captured the pole for both Super Touring races, trailed Dobson off the starting line in race two, and appeared headed for a second place finish and the Dodge Challenge Cup before making heavy contact with the McCormick Lines-LCI Honda of Crompton on the final lap. He recovered to finish sixth. Donohue's fast start in race one was slowed quickly when Darren Law spun in turn two on lap one in his INTRAX BMW, bringing out the first caution. Crompton was able to find his way around the CEC Antera BMW of Randy Pobst on the opening lap. Pobst later retired with engine failure while running fourth. On the restart, Crompton stayed close to the leading Dodges and trailed them to the checkered flag. Peter Cunningham finished fourth in the Red Line Oil/H.A.R.T. Honda. David Welch finished fifth in the Red Auto Leasing Ford, taking the Independents' Challenge victory. "The PacWest Dodge Stratus was really on the money this weekend," said Donohue. "For me the first race was picture perfect. I didn't have the greatest start in the second race, but in the first race I got a reasonably good start. It was good to have the Dodges up front for both races. While Dobson was taking the top spot from Donohue in race two, Cunningham out-muscled Crompton for third from his fourth starting position. The top four pulled away from the field in a tight pack. Crompton and Cunningham made contact on lap seven, Cunningham went head-first into the tire barrier, sustaining heavy front end damage. He was taken to the hospital and released. The race was restarted on lap 11 of the 12-lap event. The top three battled for position, and Crompton saw his opportunity in turn 13, moving under Donohue. The two came together, with Donohue hitting the tire barrier. "Unfortunately, David and I made contact; I feel bad about it," said Crompton. "David is very dissatisfied with the result as I would be. I had a quick pace around the left hander, and knew it was a marginal move, but I dived down inside knowing that there was very high risk involved. I feel bad for him and his team because they've done a very good job this weekend. But my job description is race driver; I see a hole and go for it." "The second race I flubbed the start; Dominic got up front and I really couldn't do much with him," said Donohue. "I don't think I need to address what happened at the end. I don't care to comment." Crompton took second and Welch moved up to third. The Mazda of Bob Schader and the Honda of Forrest Granlund trailed them. "I'm tickled to come away with the Dodge Challenge Cup in the PPG Dodge for the second year in a row,' said Dobson. It's a bonus; not something I had high hopes for, not after David dominated qualifying. It's very unfortunate what happened to David, taking him out of contention in the second race." "I was able to get ahead of him in the second race," added Dobson. "Our cars are so evenly matched, so once I got out in front, it was kind of the situation in the first race for me, there is nothing you can do." Dobson and Donohue remain in contention for the $50,000 bonus offered by Dodge to the driver who can capture three race victories and two poles in the four races at Belle Isle and Cleveland. Crompton was excluded from the results of the second race after a review of the incidents involving Cunningham and Donohue. With his fifth and second place finishes, Welch won the Independent's Challenge. Bob Schader finished second in the Independents' Challenge in his Schader Motorsports Mazda. In the Driver's Championship, Dobson leads with 97 points, followed by Donohue with 94. Crompton is third with 91. Cunningham is fourth with 85 points. Schader leads the Independent's Challenge with 67 points. Pobst trails him with 59. But there are new challenges on the horizon for this season's established winners this weekend at the Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 at Portland Int'l Raceway as the CART-sanctioned series prepares for the two half-hour sprints that make up races seven and eight of the Championship. The much anticipated debut of Rod Millen's '97 Super Touring program will take place this weekend as Rod Millen Motorsport reveals its South African race-winning Toyota Camry for the first time. Millen's Toyota is expected to provide strong competition for the PacWest Touring Car Team Dodges of Dominic Dobson and David Donohue, and the H.A.R.T. Honda Accord of Peter Cunningham. The Tasman Honda Accord of Neil Crompton, that won both events in Long Beach and has been a front-runner all season, will not compete this weekend. Dobson and Donohue come to the series' first road course of the season with momentum gained on the streets of Detroit. Donohue won the pole for both Motown races, and went on to capture the first sprint race in his Infinity/SiliconGraphics Dodge Stratus, ahead of the PPG Dodge Stratus of Dobson. Dobson captured the second race and the Dodge Challenge Cup. He also moved atop the driver championship standings with 97 points to Donohue's 94. Both drivers will look to continue their winning ways around the 1.95-mile, nine-turn Portland circuit. In Savannah, Peter Cunningham led every lap of both races from the pole in his H.A.R.T./Red Line Oil Honda. With his Savannah sweep and two poles at Long Beach, Cunningham is fourth in points with 81. The Independents' Challenge, for teams not supported by a manufacturer, is led by Bob Schader on the strength of a third-place finish in his Mazda 626 in Detroit. 1996 Super Touring Drivers' champion, and defending Portland winner, Randy Pobst experienced mechanical trouble in his BMW 3-Series auto and dropped behind Schader after experiencing mechanical difficulties in race one. Darren Law in a similar machine, crashed in race one. Neither driver was able to compete in race two, opening the door for Schader to take the lead in the point standings. Seattle-based, Fastech Racing with driver David Welch, was buoyed after a second and fifth place finish in Detroit in the Red Auto Leasing Ford. In the race for the Michelin Manufacturers' Cup, Dodge has pulled to within four points of Honda, 108-104, on the strength of the impressive finishes of Dobson and Donohue in Detroit. The Super Touring Championship will run two 30-minute sprints back-to-back Saturday, June 21, at 3:00 p.m. ESPN2 will broadcast races seven and eight of the Super Touring Championship on Sunday, June 29, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET (2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. PT) Entry List SUPER TOURING CHAMPIONSHIP Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 at the 1.967-mile Portland International Raceway. Donohue led race one for the entire distance from the pole. Cunningham took the race two victory after Donohue's car experienced electrical problems late in race two after starting from the pole. Donohue completed the 17-lap first race at an average speed of 78.337 mph, ahead of second place Cunningham by a comfortable margin of 13.33 seconds. Cunningham won race two by just 1.391-seconds over Rod Millen in a Toyota Camry after completing the 16-lap distance at an average speed of 71.353 mph. Starting in wet conditions, Donohue held the lead in race one after going into the Festival Curves four abreast with the PPG Dodge Stratus of teammate Dominic Dobson, the Honda of Peter Cunningham and the BMW of Randy Pobst. Dobson got off track after making side-to-side contact with Cunningham, which also slowed Pobst and gave Donohue a clear path. "Dominic did a good job of giving me a cushion for the first several laps," said Donohue of Dobson's first lap incident. "I wasn't sure who was on rain tires and who was on slicks, so I didn't know how long my margin would last. I was charging pretty hard for a long time, then when I was able to maintain a good lead, I backed off a little." The Ford of David Welch and the BMW of Darren Law quickly challenged Pobst for third place. Welch and Law made contact in turn two on lap five, sending Welch off track. He returned to the race, but later retired. Pobst closed the gap on Cunningham in the late going. He was unable to take away second place and finished third, taking the Independent's Challenge victory. Law and the MCI sponsored T.C. Kline Racing BMW of Tom Finnelly completed the top five. Taking the green flag under dry conditions in race two, Donohue pulled ahead of Dobson on the start. He was again given a cushion by his teammate who spun in turn three, and was broadsided by Millen's Toyota, bringing out an early caution. Dobson retired, but Millen was able to continue. The pace of the race changed at the halfway point when rain again fell heavily. All the drivers had started on Michelin slicks and were forced to make their way gingerly around the circuit which quickly became slippery. Pobst and Law engaged in a tight battle for third and the Independent's Challenge victory when racing resumed. On lap eight, Pobst spun in turn seven, slowing Law and allowing Millen to make his way around him for third. Cunningham shadowed Donohue until the Dodge driver ran off course at the end of the high-speed front straight on lap 11. Donohue was then the victim of electrical problems that had plagued him for a number of laps, and was unable to get his Dodge restarted. Cunningham led the remainder of the distance. Millen finished an excellent second in his first event of the year, followed by Law and the Mazda 626 of Bob Schader and Finnelly's BMW. "At the end I had enough of a lead where I was being very cautious; especially in particular areas under braking," said Cunningham. "Going into Festival and some other spots I was getting sideways, but I knew I could make it if I was careful." With a third place finish, Law took the race two Independent's Challenge victory. In the Driver's Championship, Donohue now leads with 130 points, followed by Cunningham with 119. Dobson drops to third with 108. Neil Crompton is fourth with 91 points. Schader retains the lead in the Independent's Challenge with 90 points, with Pobst now a close second at 85 points.
